At The Grove City Center for Dentistry, we recognize that a family’s lifestyle has a direct impact on each child’s health. When all families visit their family dentist, we can then counsel families about preventive care and healthy habits for everyone.

Additionally, as the best general family dentists in Grove City, OH, we are equipped to treat patients from childhood through adulthood. Pediatric Dental Care FAQ

How often should children brush their teeth?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing their teeth twice daily, first thing in the morning and just before bed, for at least two to three minutes every time.

What is the proper way of brushing my child’s teeth?

  • Begin by locating a comfortable position. You could do this with your child sitting on your lap, facing away from you, with their head resting against your body and their chin cupped in your hand.
  • Brush the teeth along the gum line to thoroughly clean each tooth (about two minutes is a good guide).
  • Brush in small circular motions. Brush along both the inside and outside surfaces.
  • Brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth back and forth.
  • After brushing, instruct your child to spit out the toothpaste rather than rinse with water. The small amount of toothpaste that remains protects teeth.

Take note: While it is essential to encourage your child to brush their teeth, do not force them to do so. Allow them to take their time. You can also watch videos, read blogs, or ask a pediatric dentist for advice.

Should I use fluoride-content toothpaste for my children?

The American Dental Association recommends brushing with water and consulting with a dentist or physician before using a fluoride toothpaste for children under two. For children aged 2 to 6, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is recommended. Other recommendations call for a “smear” of fluoride toothpaste (approximately 0.1 grams of toothpaste or 0.1 milligrams).

Do general dentists ever refer to pediatric dentists?

Yes. There are many reasons why a dentist may refer your child to a pediatric dentist, including when a child has extreme decay, is especially anxious or frightened, or if there are needs that a pediatric dentist is better suited to fill.

Ultimately, what matters most is how your child reacts to the dentist and the dental experience. At The Grove City Center for Dentistry, we want all children to feel good about visiting the dentist and enjoy learning how to care for their teeth. When children visit our practice, we work hard to make the experience a fun one so they can’t wait to come back.
